Poweroff
I always thought my hardware was too old to support powering off the PC automatically when you hit shutdown, and hence I never bothered trying to get it working. However, when I tried Ubuntu recently, it worked with the default setup, proving that my software was not too old.
In fact it was ridiculously easy to get it to work - all I had to do was load the apm module ("modprobe apm"). Or alternatively, to make it load every time I booted, uncomment that line in rc.modules.
At some point I will have to explore more of this power management functionality.
